Reconnecting Hammersmith
The new step free street and bridge over the A4 will provide a quick, safe, open air pedestrian route to Furnival Gardens, linking Hammersmith town centre to the river once more. A surface-level pedestrian crossing has been discounted by Transport for London as this would be unsafe in this location.
The new route will take people up to first floor level alongside the western side of the Town Hall, out over the A4 and then slope gently down into Furnival Gardens on the opposite side of the road.
The new bridge has been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, but at the same time careful thought has gone into its design to ensure it is a new landmark that Hammersmith can be proud of.
In response to comments made during public consultation, and to minimise the impact of the bridge on surrounding buildings, a number of changes have been made since the original design.
The walkway and bridge from King Street to Furnival Gardens has been curved, reducing the impact on the Town Hall and moving the landing of the bridge in Furnival Gardens away from nearest buildings.
Pedestrians walking across the bridge will also be able to view properly and appreciate the southern façade of the Town Hall for the first time in a generation.
